Growing up comes with challenges, from friendships, self-esteem and difficult emotions to family changes, school-related stress or significant life events. Children and teenagers experience and cope with these challenges differently, depending on their age, personality and personal experiences.
Family changes, such as divorce or separation, can have a significant emotional impact on children. They may experience sadness, anger, confusion or divided loyalties, particularly when there is ongoing conflict between their parents. Some children find it difficult to express how they really feel and may try to protect one or both parents by keeping their feelings to themselves.
Other challenges, such as friendship difficulties, low self-esteem or pressure at school, can also affect how children and teenagers feel about themselves. They may struggle with insecurity, worry about fitting in or find it difficult to manage their emotions. Experiences such as losing someone close to them, moving to a new country or adjusting to a new environment can bring additional feelings of sadness, uncertainty or loneliness.
For parents, it can be difficult to understand what their child is going through. Younger children may struggle to put their feelings into words, while teenagers may withdraw or prefer to deal with things on their own. Emotional difficulties can show themselves in different ways, from insecurity and sleep problems to changes in behaviour or school performance. Their behaviour often tells a story, even when words are missing.
At Living Loss Practice, I offer children and teenagers a safe, neutral and supportive space where they can feel heard, understood and comfortable expressing themselves, without feeling pressured or judged. My approach is personal and adapted to their age and individual needs. As talking alone is not always the most effective way for young people to express themselves, I use a variety of creative and practical methods to help them explore their emotions, understand their coping patterns and develop new ways of managing challenges.
My aim is to help children and teenagers build confidence, strengthen emotional resilience and feel better equipped to deal with life's challenges. I also support parents in understanding their child's emotional needs, improving communication and finding ways to support them with greater confidence and understanding.
